Thomas Hart Benton (American, 1889-1975)
Arguably the most important American Regionalist painter, Thomas Hart Benton was a keen interpreter of American life. His images reflect the evolution of modern American society, and he uniquely celebrated the country's rich history, strength of its hard-working people and the beauty and character of the American spirit. He is considered one of the most important painters of the “American Scene” movement of the 1930s addressing subject matter that was uniquely American as well as specific to his state of Missouri. In addition to many murals, Benton also painted landscapes and portraits and important agrarian scenes that are in major museums and private collections nationwide.
