George Caleb Bingham (American, 1811-1879)
One of the first major American artists to have come out of the early Western States and also frequently referred to as “The Missouri Artist” Bingham is distinguished for his classic narrative scenes drawn from his actual observation and experience. His most famous paintings chronicle America’s westward expansion and depict life along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers and the American frontier. However, his main bread-and-butter during his career were portrait commissions which are important historical records. His paintings are in major American museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, St. Louis Museum of Art, and numerous others. The George Caleb Bingham Catalogue Raisonné is currently being updated and is a free public resource at www.binghamcatalogue.org.
