Petah Coyne (American, b. 1953)
Best known for her elaborate, organic wax sculptures, Coyne is also a successful photographer and she consistently embraces subjects that are at once strong, delicate, and always rather baroque in their complexity. She borrows from nature, from her relationship to life-changing world events (such as 9/11 and the WW11 bombing to Hiroshima), and also from personal experiences such as her Catholic upbringing and the untimely death of her brother. She has an undergraduate degree from the Art Academy in Cincinnati and an honorary degree from Kent State University. She held educational roles with the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the School of Visual Arts, New York City. She received a Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Grant (1989), a Fellowship in Sculpture from the National Foundation of the Arts (1990 and 2000) among others. She has had solo exhibitions at the Corcoran Museum in Washington, D.C., and the High Museum, Atlanta, and others. Her work is in the permanent collections at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Whitney Museum of American Art, San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, and many others.
