Gummelt, Sam (American, 1944-2022)

One of Texas’s most noted abstract artists, Gummelt was considered a Minimalist and was renowned for his attention to detail and precise hand work such as the inset of wood panels into canvas.  His subtle yet focused craftsmanship set him apart, as he placed great significance on sublime touches to his paintings and used techniques such as quilting, woodworking, and waxing.  His work was highly valued by a small yet significant group of collectors such as New York gallerist Betty Parsons and Dallas arts patron Betty Blake.  Gummelt received a B.A. from the University of North Texas and an M.A. from Southern Methodist University.  He exhibited nationally and received two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships during his fruitful career.  His works are in major collections including the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others.
