Michal Rovner (b. Israel 1957)
Rovner is an internationally known contemporary Israeli artist working in video, photography, and cinema artwork. She studied at Tel Aviv University where she founded the city’s first photography school, “Camera Obscura.” She further studied at Jerusalem’s Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design and upon graduation in 1987 moved to New York where she worked with Robert Frank and also took inspiration from Gerhard Richter. Her work emphasizes abstraction, beauty, and dreamlike (or metaphysical) contemplation as well as some interest in politics in relation to the human condition. The New York Times called her work “haunting metaphors for our lives.” She has had over 50 solo exhibitions worldwide and received numerous awards including France’s Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. She also represented Israel at the 50th Venice Biennale. Her works is highly sought after by collectors and in important museum collections worldwide.
