Edward (Ed) Ruscha (American, b. 1937)
Painter, printmaker, and photographer Ed Ruscha was born in Omaha, Nebraska but made his home in Los Angeles; the subject of much of his now-iconic work stemming from popular culture. His first exhibitions were through Ferus Gallery (curated by Walter Hopps), alongside other west-coast artists such as Robert Irwin, Ken Price, and Edward Kienholz. Since the early 1960s his work revolved around the use of words, in a somewhat deadpan and irreverent context, and primarily as related to a California vernacular. His works are in major museum collections worldwide and he has been the subject of numerous important solo shows and retrospectives. He is one of the most sought-after and collectible artists working today.
